Trump Proposes Land Swap to End Russia-Ukraine War

President Donald Trump has floated a controversial proposal to end the war between Russia and Ukraine: a land swap that he says will be “good” and “bad” for both countries. The idea, revealed Monday, signals Trump’s intent to broker a deal directly with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The suggestion comes despite firm opposition from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who has repeatedly stated that Ukraine will not trade territory for peace.

“Russia has occupied a big portion of Ukraine,” Trump said. “They've occupied some very prime territory. We're going to try and get some of that territory back for Ukraine.”

Trump described Friday’s upcoming meeting with Putin as a “feel out” session to gauge the Russian leader’s willingness to negotiate.

“If it’s a fair deal, I will reveal it to the European Union leaders and to the NATO leaders and also to President Zelenskyy,” Trump said. “I may say, ‘lots of luck, keep fighting,’ or I may say we can make a deal.”

Despite past disappointments, Trump expressed cautious optimism about Putin’s intentions.

“I believe [Putin] wants to get it over,” Trump said. “Now, I've said that a few times, and I've been disappointed.”

Following the meeting, Trump plans to brief European leaders and Zelenskyy, and has proposed a future summit involving all three parties.

“I will put the two of them in a room,” he said. “I think it will get solved.”

Meanwhile, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is organizing a virtual summit on Wednesday, bringing together Trump, Zelenskyy, and European leaders to discuss the framework for a potential peace agreement. Topics will include pressure strategies against Russia, territorial disputes, security guarantees for Ukraine, and the sequencing of negotiations.
